The Snæfellsjökull glacier is one of the most picturesque mountains in Iceland. The volcano towers 1446 meters up from the middle of the Snæfellsnes peninsula and this famous glacier is clearly visible from more then 100 km away. Snæfellsjökull and the peninsula which holds it is a magical place and many have written poems about its grandeur and sparkling white flanks of ice and snow. The most famous literature about Snæfellsjökull is undoubtedly Jules’s Vernes novel “Journey to the center of the Earth” where the adventurers entered the passage to the center through a caldera at the top of the glacier. The hike takes 5-7 hours with average ascend time of 3-5 hours. The total elevation gain is 760 m (2,500 ft.) and the total hiking distance is 7-8 km (4,5-5 miles).

Everything about this trip is an incredible adventure; even the drive talong the through the countryside and along the coastline ot the start of the hike offers breathtaking views only surpassed by the vistas from the slopes and the peak. On clear days the enitire Vestfjord peninsula is visible, beyond the North Atlantic ocean the shores of Greenland can be glimpsed and the peninsula it self with its amazing mountains and beaches are sights never forgotten. This is one of the very best glacier hikes in the world…!

After the hike we drive down to the sheer ocean cliffs of Arnarstapi and stroll down to the Hellnar alcove for a delicious Icelandic fish soup in a tiny fishing hut a few meters from the relentless surf and pounding of the sea.
