Reykjavik Backpackers' History

Reykjavik Backpackers was founded in February 2009 by a bunch of friends and the hostel became immediately affiliated with Arctic Adventures and Nýlenduvöruverslun Hemma & Valda through its owners. We felt that Reykjavik city was really in need of a proper backpackers place and opened the accommodation wanting to make a nice, clean, simple place loaded with services and good staff! When we received the building on Laugavegur 28 it did not have any rooms or facilities so we started building walls, making toilets, etc. We worked day and night as we didn't have a whole lot of time before the real season whould start. On June 1st 2009, despite still being very raw, we welcomed our first guest which came from the US. We felt really happy and accomplished although there was still lot to do. The first summer was absolutely great, we welcomed tons of guests and were really happy with the outcome. We managed to giver our guests a nice place to sleep and relax and soon came known to be a good place to meet other travelers. Being a tourist information did also suit us very well and we were able to assist our guests and other travelers with booking tours and providing information. During the summer our owners also expanded their other buisnesses affiliating us with even more cool companies being Glacier Guides in the South of Iceland, Cheap Jeep Car rental and Tíu Dropar café accross the street. That said we are so looking forward to keep on providing good services and welcoming guests!
